HOW TO GET YOUR HEALTHIEST SKIN EVER IN 2017

by

So, here at The Decoder, we do lots of chatting about pretty products—as we very well should. But, since I’m a firm believer that the painting will only look as good as the canvas it’s on, today I want to talk about how to get skin that is not only beautiful, but downright healthy. Keeping your skin hydrated, balanced, and smooth is a challenge year-round, but the wintertime is particularly challenging, due to harsh outdoor temps and extra-drying indoor heating. So, use the beginning of this year to get some happy-skin habits solidly into place, and you’ll be golden for the rest of 2017—let this be your skin’s best year yet!

LAST DAYS OF SUMMER

 BY THEFASHIONGUITAR

The Post-Fashion Month workload is always extremely overwhelming… A gazillion outfits to share, a huge bulk of social media updates to be done, and planning our Fall/Winter “editorial calendar” and collaborations. I love it, don’t get me wrong, I do, but it’s time to expand the team to make sure my time is not pulled too much towards the logistical side of the business, but remains where my true passion is: Creating content.
But more on team-expansion later, let’s first focus on cherishing those last days of summer, because before we know it we are all bound to home again, having to stay in because of the pouring rain and excruciating cold temperatures. I am not looking forward to that. Hence, with a very welcome “high” of 23 degrees outside today, I’m pulling this pink-look from just before I left for New York Fashion Week. A mix of sequins and thin wool, long layers, and the must-have mules and bag of the season: the Alberta Ferreti Mia Mules and JW Anderson Pierce bag.
Holding on to the sun a little longer…

A SUBTLE, BUT SUPER-PRETTY PARTY MAKEUP TUTORIAL TO TRY THIS WEEKEND

Shimmery but understated.
by

Beauty tutorials are big on YouTube — a search for "makeup tutorial" and "hair tutorial" yields more than five million videos. In this weekly series, we put a mix of popular and under-the-radar tutorials to the test and show you what's best.
Something became clear during a recent conversation with my fellow Fashionista editors: Plenty of us have our everyday makeup routine down to a science, but when it comes time for a party or special occasion of some kind and we want a little more of a lewk, we're uncertain. The obvious thing to do would be to reach for one of our favorite lipsticks, but anything beyond that seems daunting. Beauty blogger Cat Matthews is here to help with a "Glam Party Makeup!" video tutorial (you can tell it's a fun and adorable video because she uses both the word "glam" and an exclamation point in the title).
"I think this makeup would be perfect if you're going to a fancy dinner or party," she says of the look, a glimmery, warm smoky eye with bronze tones and a matte, pale-brown lip. Watch the full video above to see every step involved in getting it (hint: she relies mainly on her fingers — not complicated brushes —for the eye look), as well as the blogger's momentary freak-out when a rainbow appears outside her window. Adorable.

WILL DRY BRUSHING YOUR FACE GIVE YOU BETTER SKIN?

It's not just for your thighs anymore.
by

Who wouldn't want skin that is this flawless? No one, that's who. Photo: Imaxtree
Dry brushing has been a "thing" for a few years now. You've probably heard about it from your friend who is like, super into juice cleanses, or from the dozens of fancy-pants celebs who swear that it's changed their bodies, eliminated their cellulite and helped them transcend to a higher plane of being. "Dry brushing has become popular for all parts of skin," says dermatologist Annie Chiu. "Traditionally it was used for the thigh areas to improve the appearance of cellulite. It is thought to increase blood flow and circulation and leave your skin toned, exfoliated and better hydrated. It is also suggested that dry brushing can help your lymphatic system clear toxins from the body."
The principle is simple: You take a dry body brush (ideally with stiff, natural bristles) and move it in slow, circular motions over your body, leaving your skin, and the flesh underneath, better and brighter than before. With the prospect of smoother, more toned skin on the table, it's only natural that some people would start taking it to the next level: What's good for the thighs must be good for the face, right? Here's what experts had to say.
For oily and combination skin types, dry brushing can be helpful for issues like the dreaded early-morning puffy face (that's ye olde lymphatic drainage at work). And for clogged-pore sufferers, the bristles help slough away dead skin cells that can lead to blackheads and acne, though it's best to avoid the treatment in the midst of a full-blown breakout, since the friction can irritate already inflamed blemishes. "This method of exfoliation appeals to people, as it's a step that wouldn't have the concern of inactivating other skin-careactives (such as vitamin C or retinol) if you have a more complex skin-care regimen," says Chiu. Dry brushing can also work as a gentle exfoliation option for those whose skin reacts badly with ingredients like AHA.
But — and that's a fairly significant but — there are some pretty major caveats. "As a dermatologist, I don't suggest dry brushing, and definitely avoid it if you have eczema, dry or very sensitive skin," says Chiu. For those types, this kind of exfoliation can be too harsh, leaving skin dry and inflamed, and aggravating underlying redness. Flaky and tender: Great descriptors for biscuits, but exactly the opposite of how you want for your face to look.
If you do decide to try facial dry brushing, the tool you use is important. "Find a gentle brush with natural — not synthetic — bristles that's meant for facial use. Don't use the same brush as you might for your body," Chiu warns. Body brushes typically have very stiff bristles that are far too intense for the more sensitive skin on your face. The other key to keeping your complexion looking smooth and pretty (as opposed to raw and inflamed) is to resist the urge to overdo it. One or two dry-brushing sessions a week, maximum, will be enough to accomplish all of the dead-skin-sloughing you need; trying to turbo charge things with an extra few sessions will likely leave the skin inflamed and the natural network that keeps your moisture in balance compromised.

HERE ARE TWO REALLY PRETTY WAYS TO WEAR BROWN LIPSTICK

As demonstrated by Priyanka Chopra and Joan Smalls.

Brown lipstick isn't exactly a new. See: the entirety of the '90s. But that doesn't mean it's not majorly trending right now. And October is the perfect time to experiment with warm, chocolaty variations on the hue, as actressPriyanka Chopra and model Joan Smalls each so flawlessly demonstrated this week. Both paired it with minimal eye makeup, glow-y skin (a trait it seems impossible for either of them to ever not have) and expertly groomed brows.
Chopra's take on the trend, shown above, relied on a Tom Ford lipstick with a creamy finish that's neither fully matte nor glossy (makeup artist Stephanie Barnes, who created the look, has yet to divulge the exact shade; we've reached out to her to try and find out). It's a cool, plum-tinged mocha that — it has to be said — looks seriously gorgeous on her.

5 Things Celebrity Hairstylists Taught Me About Embracing My Natural Curls

by
It just takes one look at the red carpet to see the proof on stars includingCamila Alves, Ciara and Vanessa Hudgens: curls are back. Many stars areembracing their natural texture these days, and even naturally wavy girls including Chrissy Teigen and Gigi Hadid are turning to hot tools to create major volume for big events. And learning to love one’s curls has become a talking point for stars includingZendaya and Tamara Mowry. So when I saw these stars rocking their natural textures and voluminous styles, I was inspired to put away my blowdryer and flatiron and let my naturally frizzy, curly hair go free.
One problem: I had absolutely no idea how to manage my hair. I had my unruly curls chemically straightened at age 14, and since then, I’ve had every Brazilian blowout, relaxer and keratin treatment that you can get, and I’ve worn my hair in its natural state for no longer than two days at a time before giving into the temptation of a smooth blowout. But earlier this year, I forgot to book an appointment for my routine keratin treatment, and accidentally allowed my hair to revert to its original texture — something that I haven’t truly known since I was a freshman in high school.

Ciara Is the Newest Face of Revlon

It's about time she got a major beauty gig.
BY

Consider it fate that Ciara has just been named the newest spokeswoman for Revlon–she was named after the Ciara by Revlon perfume from 1973, a gift her father gave her mother before she was born.
"I think my mom was putting it into the universe," she tells WWD. "Your name will be Ciara and one day you will have a Revlon campaign." Far-fetched? Yes. But considering Ciara is consistently one of our biggest beauty inspirations, the news is no less exciting.

By

One of Korea’s biggest exports, apart from K-pop, are its beauty products. Korean consumers reportedly use up to 15 beauty products a day and have ten-step daily routines. But whatever they’re doing, it seems to be working, which is why Googling “Korean beauty products” brings such an overwhelming (and often overpriced) mass of options. The goods news is, plenty of these cult donkey-milk masks and snail-mucus creams are readily available on Amazon. Here are some of the best.

What’s Next in Korean Beauty

by
Photo: Topic Images/Getty
If you want a crystal ball into next year’s popular American beauty trends, look to the South Korean beauty industry. BB creams first launched in Korea several years ago before inundating the U.S. market and inspiring American beauty brands to spawn their own. Korea’s next big advancement, the cushion compact, appeared two years ago, and this year, American beauty companies like Lancôme, L’Oréal Paris, M.A.C Cosmetics, and Clinique have all moved to launch their own versions. And Korea’s influence shows no sign of waning.
To find out what to expect next in Korean beauty (and, several years later, American beauty), the Cut talked to Alicia Yoon, CEO and co-founder of Korean beauty site Peach and Lily and a licensed aesthetician in Korea and the United States. Yoon told us in her own words about what’s trending inKorean beauty.

I'm Stealing Cara Delevingne's 'Suicide Squad' Premiere Makeup Look Even Though I Have Nowhere to Wear It

by
Too bad Lisa Eldridge can't do it for me.

The highly anticipated movie Suicide Squad has finally hit theaters. I wasn't particularly looking forward to seeing the movie, to be honest. But in my various social media feeds, I started noticing that Cara Delevingne's makeup was looking pretty damn good all the time recently. (She plays Enchantress in the film.)
This all made a lot of sense when I found out she has Lisa Eldridge with her for all these Suicide Squad promotional events. And for the world premiere, Lisa gave Cara an almost editorial look: a smudgy, sparkly gunmetal eye paired with a bold red lip.

SKIN These Dry Oils Are Making Me Wonder Why I Ever Bothered with Body Lotion

My skin is next-level smooth!

There's a running joke between my mother and I that I own enough body lotion to fill up a swimming pool. Although my facial skin is quite oily, my body skin can reach Sahara-level dryness without much provocation.
Since I started reading xoVain, I’ve been introduced to the wonderful world ofdry oils, and now I’m wondering why they haven’t been my go-to all along.
Here are the ones I've been obsessed with lately.

Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse

This is the new limited-edition labeling, which makes me feel even more like a fancy lady.

The Acne Pads I Refuse to Use on My Face Are Doing Wonders for My Body

This teen staple has officially redeemed itself — as long as it stays below the neck.

There is a time in our lives where we are led to believe that if something's burning, that means it's working. That time is usually during early pubescence, when we're encouraged to slather alcohol-heavy toners and tonics onto our newly blemished pre-teen skin in the hopes that burning away the bacteria will make us look "clean and clear and under control."
Thankfully, I learned early on that those ingredients made my sensitive, dry skin recoil in horror, and I chucked their containers to the back of the bathroom cabinet. I learned to baby my face — but that didn't stop me from treating the skin below my neck like wood that need to be sandpapered.

CHANEL LE ROUGE COLLECTION N°1

by THEFASHIONGUITAR

I would like to start by saying that any time spend with Chanel, is time perfectly well spend. So there’s not much that tops being invited by the Chanel Beauty team to come along to London for the presentation of Lucia Pica’s – Chanel’s new Global Creative Make-up and Color Designer – debut collection: Chanel Le Rouge Collection N°1.
As Gabrielle Chanel once said “Red is the color of life, of blood, I love red” and Lucia Pica completely shares these passionate feelings about the color red… “I am obsessed by the color red,” says Pica. “For me there is strength and emotion, warmth and disruption in the color red.” And while walking through different rooms where she showed us a collection of incredible photographs, capturing the theatrical and sensorial elements of life, I could feel this true love for the color. “I really wanted to explore the meaning of color and what is behind it. There is an idea of the symbolism of red and a red undertone runs throughout the collection.”
Not only was I very much impressed by the creative process that comes with the actual creation of a collection as such, I also started to fall in love with her as a person. So refreshing how she was telling us about her debut collection for Chanel with her beautiful French accent and that sweet smile. I mean, wow, what an inspiring woman!
In a variation of tones, textures and finishes, carefully applied on three angelic model faces, Lucia Pica revealed the many facets of the iconic shade and the expressive palette she created for face, lips, cheeks, and eyes.
Of course after hearing all about it, it was time to try the new line on our own faces. And with a little advice from Lucia Pica herself, I went for the copper eye cream with dark red eye-liner, and a dark lip. In fact the darkest lipstick in this palette – who would have thought that could look so hot!
