In a Denim Rut? Here Are 20 Inspiring New Ways to Wear Jeans

by  Cordelia Tai, Maria Denardo

Blue jeans have reigned over the trouser kingdom for decades. Yves Saint Laurent wished he invented them, Andy Warhol wanted to die in them and Giorgio Armani once called them the symbol for democracy. But the past few years haven’t been kind to the denim market. In the midst of the athleisure wear boom, U.S. denim sales dropped 6 percent in 2013 and 8 percent in 2014, according to consumer tracking service NPD Group.
Then, beginning in the fall of 2015, everything changed, thanks in part to a revitalization of new denim trends on the runway. “Denim is a category that’s really evolved in the last season, with designers leading the charge and showcasing it on the runways,” Roopal Patel, senior vice president and fashion director of Saks Fifth Avenue, told WWD this April. “It’s elevated from just being casual, everyday dressing. Denim has become so much a part of everyday dressing that designers are looking for creative ways to expand the category.”
“Denim is really the quintessential street fabric,” echoed Stephanie Solomon, Lord & Taylor’s vice president and fashion director. “We are living in a casual world right now. You don’t need to be dressed up, unless you are a lawyer. Even politicians aren’t adhering to dress codes.” Amen to that.
The denim resurgence isn’t just happy news for retailers. With the myriad of show-stopping new styles on the market, we’re more than ready to break up with our yoga pants.
Want to get inspired? These celebrities and street style stars demonstrate how to wear jeans and rework your favorite denim for fall. Here are 20 new ways to wear jeans that may surprise you.

The yin to Kim’s yang (and we speak purely in terms of color choice here), Bella Hadid graces the streets of New York City in an eye-catching ensemble that has us fully converted to the dark side. From her peekaboo laced-up black jeans to her off-the-shoulder ballerina wrap to her sheer undershirt, the supermodel’s got pitch-black dressing down to an art. Finish off your monochrome look with skin-tone shoes and the slightest touch of color (here, tinted retro aviators more than do the trick). #goals

Style Heroine's Evangelie Smyrniotaki arrives at the Elie Saab Haute Couture show in Paris wearing an embellished Olympia Le-Tan cropped white bomber, this season’s It deconstructed Vetements jeans and to-die-for pointy patent cone Christian Dior heels a la Raf Simons. Wallflowers need not apply.

Rihanna rocks a tie-dye (yup, it’s back) Nine Inch Nails tee with destroyed denim skinnies and a fur stole, her latest de rigueur accessory. The R&B-siren-cum-designer polishes off the look with two of her own creations — shades from her collaboration with Dior and embroidered ankle-high stiletto booties from her Denim Desserts line with Manolo Blahnik. Her matchy denim footwear serves the dual purpose of self-promotion and leg elongation. She slays.

This is deconstructed denim done right. Teaming her ripped boyfriend jeans with layered necklaces, a neutral vintage tee, sleek fashion sneaks, precise makeup and immaculately sideswept hair, Kristen Stewart embodies casual chic. We, like Kristen’s Certain Women co-star Lily Gladstone, would also be cheery in the presence of such style.

Go big or go home. This look channels so many of the season’s hottest trends — oversized, half-zip jumpers that put yourdad’s fleeces to shame, frayed denim, high-low hems, architectural heels, teeny bags…need we go on? Brava, attendee of the Paris menswear shows. We doff ourproverbial dad caps to you.

Spotted in New York City, a red-lipped Chloë Sevigny is a testament to the benefits of recycling timeless classics, i.e., Fiorucci tees, high-waisted denim flaresand shoulder bags straight out of L.L.Bean. The indie princess’ casual white loafers and translucent-rimmed sunglasses raise the bar on effortlessly cool dressing.

Fashion blogger Lisa Hahnbück wears hertwo-tone wide-leg denim with a coordinating ruffle-sleeve Victoria Beckham jumper, Fendi sunglasses and a petite red Chloe bag during Berlin Fashion Week. Wir lieben (We love).

Celebrities from Princess Di to Ali MacGraw have demonstrated the perennial chicness of an all-white look. Unlike its washed-out cousins, white denim adds no extra dimension to the leg and therefore a good pair can be tricky to track down let alone style. Take a page out of Kim Kardashian’s book and opt for a figure-hugging style with a few strategically-placed rips. Kim finishes off her airport look with a tan floor-length duster, sheer Yeezy stilettos and a Birkin, natch.

Stylist Pernille Teisbaek doesn’t believe in playing it safe and neither should you. This Paris Fashion Week, she mixed her anything-but-basic frayed denim jeans with standout primary stripes, metallic block-heeled Gucci loafers and a gorgeously gargantuan beige Vetements trench that has us hyped for gray skies. What better way to shake off the blues?

Colorblocking FTW. Fashion stylist and blogger Sophie Gaten masters minimal dressing with maximum style in a snowy Victoria Beckham jacket, a navy Zara turtleneck, dramatically cuffed (the higher the better — go ahead, everyone’s doing it) Brooks jeans and suede Dior boots on the second day of Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week.

Actress Diane Kruger gets a warm welcome from Joshua Jackson at LAX. Her high-waisted, 70s-style jeans get a modern update with a striped T-shirt layered under a red blazer.

Actress Amber Heard arrives at LAX in a classic T-shirt and jeans combo, accented with leopard flats, a wide-brimmed hat and a statement necklace.

Beyoncé steps out in Midtown in an all-white ensemble paired with neutral accessories. For this look, a Tide to Go pen is a must. So is a driver.

Model Chrissy Teigen touches down in Los Angeles in perfectly distressed denim. Matching cognac accessories are the key to pulling off this look.

Fashion stylist Clara Racz coordinates her boyfriend jeans with a starry denim shirt and lace-up high heels in Milan. Consider this the new Texas tux.

Actress and The Honest Company founder Jessica Alba sets the bar for airport style in boyfriend jeans, a slouchy white T-shirt and a nautical-inspired navy blazer. The RBF is optional.

Model Kate Upton leaves her London hotel in classic model attire; black skinny jeans, a black T-shirt and black heels. She elevates the look with a gray princess coat and day bag. It's that easy.

Model Kendall Jenner takes a break from her busy schedule to shop in LA with her gal pals. Her high-waisted jeans get the Western treatment with suede ankle boots, a fringed handbag and an equestrian belt.

Model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley isn't afraid to take a risk. Here, she takes her denim to the streets of LA, where she mixed it up with a statement-making floral jacket and two-tone fedora.

Say cheese! Model Miranda Kerr makes an appearance at Haneda Airport in Tokyo, where she defines jet-set style with a roomy, black day bag, a draped jacket, a pair of baby blues and jaw-dropping ankle boots.
